fix secure sites won't load on broadband (Mac OS X)
Sometimes websites don't load properly. You might have problems collecting your email or logging into internet banking. There is a subtle adjustment that can be made to a setting on your Mac that can help resolve these problems.
For Mac OS X 10.2 please see here.
To start, go to System Preferences via the Apple icon in the top left menu bar or via the Dock as shown below.
1. System Preferences
You will be presented with the following options under System Preferences. Choose Network under the Internet & Network section to continue.
2. Network
The Network window gives you a snapshot of what's going on with the various network configurations on your Mac. Select Built-in Ethernet from the "Show" drop down menu to continue.
From here choose the Ethernet Tab.
Here under the Ethernet tab we can change the way the ethernet connection works.
Here under the Ethernet tab we can change the way the ethernet connection works. Using the "Configure" drop down menu we chnage from Automatically to Manually (Advanced) to adjust the settings.
In the section titled Maximum Packet Size (MTU) we will see 3 options. By default it will be on Standard (1500). Given we want to change the MTU we then click into the Custom button. Now we get a cursor in the box and we can adjust the MTU to whatever we want like in the diagram below.
Then click the Apply Now button in the bottom right hand corner. You have now set the MTU for the connection. The Mac does not need to be restarted for this to take effect.
If you ever need to reverse this MTU change you can do so easily by simply changing the "Configure" option back to Automatically.
