Retrieving Email Headers
You can find instructions for retrieving email headers from a variety of email programs below. Click on the link for your email program for these step-by-step instructions.

Once you have retrieved the headers for an email, you can determine where it has originated from using the methods explained in [[Understanding and Dealing with Spam Email|Understanding Email Headers]].
Windows
Microsoft Outlook Express/Windows Mail
- Open the message in it's own window by double clicking the message in the Inbox.
- Click on File in the menu bar.
- Select Properties.
- Click on the Details tab
- Click on Message Source .
- Highlight, copy and paste everything from the window that appears.
- The Windows commands for doing this are Ctrl-A (Select all), Ctrl-C (Copy) and Ctrl-P (Paste).
Outlook 97
Outlook 97 requires a patch to display message headers which can be downloaded here. Once you have downloaded and installed this patch please see the instructions for Outlook 98 and 2000.
Outlook 98, 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007
- Open the message in it's own window by double clicking the message in the Inbox.
- Click on View in the menu bar.
- Select Options .
- Highlight, copy and paste everything from the Internet Headers window.
- The Windows commands for doing this are Ctrl-A (Select all), Ctrl-C (Copy) and Ctrl-P (Paste).

- Click File in the menu bar.
- Select Properties
- Click on the Details tab
- Click on Message Source .
- Highlight, copy and paste everything from the window that appears.

Mac OS
Outlook Express for Mac/Microsoft Entourage
- Select the email in the Inbox by clicking on it once.
- Click View in the menu bar.
- Select Source .
- Highlight, copy and paste everything from the window that appears.
- The Macintosh commands for doing this are Cmd-A (Select all), Cmd-C (Copy) and Cmd-P (Paste).
- Click on Mail in the menu bar.
- Select Preferences
- Click on Viewing
- Under Show header detail , select All
